Our verdict

Where it wins

  • IP67 dust and water rating, with a salt water resistance claim that most rivals do not make
  • Street prices run far below list, 98 dollars at Target and about 78 at Best Buy in late August 2026
  • Ships with a detachable strap for hanging it off a bag or handlebar

Where it loses

  • Charging is slow, about 5 hours per Sony, limited by the 7.5 W input
  • Single woofer and tweeter, so one unit gives no stereo separation
  • At its full price near 130 to 138 dollars it is easy to beat; it mainly makes sense on sale

The ULT Field 1 is Sony's answer to the JBL Flip line, with the same rugged outdoor pitch plus a one-press ULT bass boost. With retailers currently selling it 30 to 50 dollars under the Flip 7, it is the better deal for most casual listeners. Skip it if you want fast charging or plan to pay full list price.

Common questions

What does the ULT button do?

It toggles Sony's bass enhancement mode, which boosts low frequencies. It is a sound-profile switch, not a separate speaker mode.

Can it handle the beach or a pool?

Sony rates it IP67 for dust and water immersion and additionally claims salt water resistance, so beach and poolside use is within its rating.

How does it compare with the JBL Flip 7?

The Flip 7 carries a higher IP68 rating, a drop rating and a longer claimed battery, but typically costs 30 to 50 dollars more at current prices. The Sony counters with its bass boost button, strap and lower street price.
