How to pick one

The first real decision is runtime versus weight, and the two pull against each other. A bigger battery cleans longer but adds weight you carry the whole time, including overhead on stairs. Manufacturers rate runtime in eco mode with a non-powered tool attached, which is the best case, not the case that matches how most people actually vacuum a floor. Treat the printed number as a ceiling and expect real cleaning sessions on a motorized head at normal power to run noticeably shorter.

Suction numbers get over-weighted because they are the easiest spec to compare, but they are measured at the motor, not at the floor, and brands do not all test the same way. A vacuum with a lower published suction figure but a well-designed brushroll and sealed HEPA path can pick up more debris in practice than one with a bigger number and a leaky bin seal. Read suction claims as a rough signal within one brand's own lineup, not as a number you can compare across brands.

Bin capacity and filter maintenance are the ongoing cost that never shows up in the price. A small bin under half a gallon needs emptying every session or two in a home with pets or carpet, and a washable filter that needs monthly cleaning to keep suction from dropping is a recurring chore even though it has no dollar cost. Check what the filter is made of and how often the manufacturer says to clean it before buying on price alone.

Attachments and dock type change the real cost. A wall-mount charging dock is standard on most mid-range models, but a few budget vacuums ship with only a bare charger cable, which is less convenient day to day. Crevice tools, pet brushes and a second detachable battery are often sold separately even on expensive models, so check what actually comes in the box, not just what the marketing photo shows.
