How to pick one

The first thing to understand is that a plug adapter changes the shape of a plug, not the voltage. Most of the world runs on 220 to 240 volts, while the US and a handful of other countries run on 120 volts. A modern phone or laptop charger is almost always dual voltage and works fine either way, but anything with a heating element, a hair dryer or a travel kettle for instance, can be destroyed or start a fire on the wrong voltage unless the label says it accepts 100-240V. None of the adapters here converts voltage; that is a separate, heavier device called a voltage converter.

Once voltage is settled, the next decision is all-in-one versus a plug-only set. An all-in-one adapter has one body that reconfigures into different plug shapes, sometimes with USB ports built in, and it is what most travelers reach for because it is one thing to pack and one thing to lose. A plug-only set, several separate pieces with no electronics, costs less and has nothing to break, but you need your own cables and it is easier to leave one piece behind in a hotel outlet.

USB ports look like a convenience feature, but the wattage behind them is the number that actually matters. A basic USB port in the 12 to 17 watt range charges a phone fine but will not meaningfully charge a laptop. If the plan includes working from a laptop abroad, look for an adapter that states USB-C PD output in the 45 to 100 watt range and check that figure against your laptop charger's own rating, not just the port count.

Grounding and fuse protection are the specs people skip past that actually protect the trip. A grounded adapter passes a ground pin through to the outlet, which matters for laptop chargers and other grounded electronics, while an ungrounded adapter works fine for double-insulated devices like most phone chargers. A replaceable fuse means a local power surge costs you a two-dollar fuse instead of the whole adapter. Neither shows up in a product photo, so it is worth reading the spec sheet rather than judging by looks.
