How to pick one

The first decision is not capacity, it is drainage. A bucket-only unit means walking over and emptying it by hand, sometimes more than once a day in a genuinely damp basement. A gravity drain hose solves that for free, but only if the unit sits above a floor drain or sink it can drain into by gravity. A built-in condensate pump costs more but pushes water uphill or sideways through a hose, which is the only option if there is no drain nearby. Decide this before comparing pint numbers, because the wrong drainage choice is the thing people regret most after buying.

The pint rating on the box is the most confusing number in the category. In 2019 the Department of Energy changed the official test conditions for dehumidifier capacity, and the new numbers are measured at a lower temperature and humidity than the old ones. A unit rated 50 pints today would have carried a rating in the 60s or 70s under the pre-2019 test, with no change to the physical machine. Some listings even say so directly, noting a model was 'previously' a higher pint number. Treat the pint rating as only comparable against other units tested after 2019, and use square footage coverage and your own room's humidity as a sanity check rather than the pint number alone.

Coverage area figures assume a sealed room with a normal ceiling height and average humidity, so a basement with a sump pump running, a leaky foundation, or an open floor plan needs more capacity than the square footage alone suggests. Oversizing is cheap insurance: a bigger unit cycles off sooner and runs less than a marginal one running constantly. A small thermoelectric unit is a different category entirely, meant for a closet, RV or gun safe, not a room, and pulling ounces per day rather than pints.

Noise matters more in a bedroom than a basement, and manufacturers rarely publish a clean decibel figure for either fan speed. Energy Star certification is worth checking on any unit that will run for hours at a time, since dehumidifiers are one of the more power-hungry small appliances in a home when left running continuously through a humid season.

How much should a good dehumidifier cost?

The ones we track run from about seventy dollars for a small closet-size thermoelectric unit up to around three hundred dollars for a large basement unit with a big tank. A solid single-room bucket dehumidifier usually lands in the middle of that range.

Why did dehumidifier pint ratings change?

The Department of Energy updated the official test procedure in 2019 to use lower temperature and humidity conditions than the previous test. The same physical machine now earns a lower pint number, so a 50-pint unit bought today removes less water than a 50-pint unit bought before the change, not because it got weaker but because the test got stricter.

Bucket, gravity drain, or pump, which drainage type should I get?

Bucket-only is fine for a small room you walk past daily. A gravity drain hose is the best value if the unit will sit above a floor drain or sink. A built-in pump costs more but is the only option if you need to push water uphill or through a long hose run, which is common in finished basements.

Can a small thermoelectric unit replace a real dehumidifier?
