How to pick one

The first real decision is construction, not thickness. A solid block of memory foam, gel-infused or not, gives one consistent feel across the whole surface and along the edges. A pillow-top style stitches a softer fiberfill layer over a thinner foam core, which feels plush immediately but the fill compresses faster than dense foam does. Neither is wrong, but they age differently, and a listing that just says '4 inches' without naming the layers is hiding the part that matters most.

Density is the spec people skip and shouldn't. Foam sold at 2 to 2.5 lbs per cubic foot is common in the cheapest toppers and tends to soften and lose its shape within a year or two of nightly use. Foam at 3 lbs and up costs more but holds a flatter surface longer and resists the permanent body-shaped dent that lighter foam develops. If a listing doesn't state a density figure at all, that is itself information: it usually means the number isn't flattering.

Brand name buys you a warranty and a specific feel, not necessarily a better spec sheet. A well-known mattress brand's topper can cost close to double a comparable independent brand at the same thickness, while publishing less technical detail about the foam itself, since the sell is the brand's reputation rather than a number you can compare. That is a legitimate reason to pay more if you already like that brand's mattresses, but it is worth naming honestly rather than assuming the higher price means a better topper on paper.

Fit and care details decide whether you actually keep using it. Check the maximum mattress depth a topper's straps or fitted cover will handle, since a topper that keeps sliding off a deep mattress gets abandoned fast. Most covers are described as removable and machine washable, but the foam core itself almost never is, so pay attention to whether spot cleaning is your only option if something spills.
