Pillows

Bed pillows compared by fill, adjustability and verified price, from adjustable shredded foam to latex and cheap down alternative.

The fill decides almost everything else about a pillow, loft, heat retention, how it packs down and how it ages. Adjustable pillows let you fix a bad fit after the fact; fixed-fill pillows make you pick the right height or firmness up front. None of this is measured on a single scale across brands, so treat firmness and loft claims as the maker's own description, not a lab number.

How to pick one

The first decision is adjustable versus fixed fill. An adjustable pillow, usually shredded memory foam or a proprietary foam blend, ships with a zippered cover and often extra fill, so you can add or remove material until the loft matches your neck. A fixed-fill pillow, whether down alternative, solid latex or molded foam, comes in one shape and you either buy the right height the first time or live with the wrong one. If you do not already know your ideal loft, paying for adjustability is worth more than any other spec on this page.

People over-weight the firmness label and under-weight sleep position. A pillow marketed as medium firm can feel completely different to a stomach sleeper, who wants low and soft to keep the neck level, than to a side sleeper, who needs enough height to fill the gap between ear and mattress. Brands rarely test firmness the same way, so the same word means different things across two different pillows. Match loft to sleep position first, then treat the firmness word as a rough guide, not a spec you can compare across brands.

Heat retention is a real tradeoff and it tracks the fill, not the brand. Solid memory foam and dense latex hold body heat closer than shredded fill or down alternative, because there is less airflow through a solid core. Gel layers and grid cutouts help but do not eliminate the difference. If you already run hot at night, weight that over almost every other spec, including price.

Care instructions and warranty length are the detail people find out too late. Some pillows let you machine wash the entire thing, others only the cover, and some solid latex or foam cores are spot clean only forever. Warranty terms on pillows range from one year to five, and a sleep trial, when offered, is usually the only real way to return an opened pillow at all. Check both before you buy, not after the first spill.

Common questions

How much should a good bed pillow cost?

The ones we track run from about thirty dollars for a basic down-alternative two-pack to well over two hundred dollars for a latex and grid pillow bought direct from the brand. Adjustable shredded-foam pillows and hand-shapeable memory foam pillows sit in between, roughly sixty to ninety dollars. The table above shows the exact price we verified for each pillow and the date we checked it.

Is an adjustable pillow worth the extra cost over a basic down alternative?

If you do not already know your ideal loft, yes, because you can fix a too-high or too-flat pillow after the fact instead of returning it. If you already sleep well on a specific fixed loft, a cheaper down-alternative or molded pillow does the same job for less.

Do cooling or gel pillows actually sleep cooler?

A grid cutout, a gel layer or a ventilated latex core all increase airflow compared with a solid memory foam block, and that measurably reduces how much heat builds up against your head. None of them air-condition the pillow. If you run hot, prioritize a fill built for airflow over one marketed simply as cooling.

What is the difference between a sleep trial and a warranty on a pillow?

A sleep trial is a return window, usually 30 to 100 nights, that lets you send an opened pillow back if it does not work for you. A warranty only covers manufacturing defects over a longer period, often one to five years, and most brands will not take back an opened pillow once that trial window has passed. Check both separately before buying, since a long warranty does not mean you can return a pillow that just feels wrong.
