Our verdict
Where it wins
- IP68 rating covers dust plus water submersion, and JBL adds a 1 m drop rating
- Plays lossless audio over USB-C, which is uncommon in this size class
- Auracast lets it pair with other recent Auracast-capable JBL speakers
Where it loses
- The 16 hour battery figure is JBL's own number and assumes the Playtime Boost setting
- Auracast pairing does not work with older JBL PartyBoost speakers
- Street price sits near list, while the similar-size Sony ULT Field 1 sells for much less
The Flip 7 is the default choice in mid-size portable speakers, with a tougher IP68 and drop-rated build and USB-C lossless playback added over the Flip 6. Buy it if you want the safe mainstream pick and plan to keep it for years. Skip it if you are price-driven, since Sony and Soundcore sell comparable speakers for 30 to 50 dollars less.

Common questions
Is the JBL Flip 7 waterproof?
Yes. JBL rates it IP68, which covers dust and submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for 30 minutes, and says it survives 1 meter drops onto concrete.
How long does the battery last?
JBL rates it at up to 16 hours of playtime with the Playtime Boost feature enabled. Real playtime depends on volume and settings.
Can it pair with my older JBL speaker?
Only partly. The Flip 7 uses Auracast for multi-speaker pairing, which works with other Auracast-capable JBL speakers but not with older models that use PartyBoost.
