The best sleep masks for side sleepers (updated August 2026)
Updated Aug 27, 2026 ยท prices dated per offer
Sleeping on your side breaks most sleep masks in a specific way. The strap that felt fine sitting up gets pinned between your head and the pillow, so it either digs in or slides up. And a flat mask presses fabric directly onto your closed eyelids and lashes for hours, which is the sensation most people describe as the reason they stopped wearing one.
So the three attributes that matter here are not the ones on the front of the box. They are where the strap sits and how it adjusts, whether the mask holds itself off your eyes with a contour or cup, and how the weight is distributed once your head is horizontal. We compared four masks we track on the manufacturers' own published specifications for those three things.
Every price below was read from the retailer's page on the date shown. What we are not going to do is tell you which one feels best against your face, because that is not something published specs can settle and we have not slept in them.

Best contour for side sleeping
1. Manta Sleep Mask
Manta is the one built around the eyelid problem. The eye cups detach and reposition independently, so per Manta the cups do the light blocking and nothing rests on your eyelids or lashes. That is the single design decision that matters most when your face is turned into a pillow, because the fabric never gets pressed flat against your eyes.
The strap is fully adjustable at a 73 cm circumference, and the whole mask weighs 142 g, so there is no fixed tension to fight when you roll over. Manta lists modal fabric cups with a polycotton exterior strap, machine washable cold, and backs it with a 60-day money-back guarantee. It was $39 on Manta's site on August 26, 2026.
Skip it if: you want something flat for a carry-on, since the eye cups make it noticeably bulkier to pack.
Best if the strap is what wakes you
2. Nodpod Weighted Sleep Mask
Nodpod removes the strap entirely. It is a four-pod bean-bag design, 29 by 4 inches, that you drape over your eyes rather than fasten around your head, filled with BPA-free polyethylene beads to 9 oz. If your problem is elastic digging into the side of your head or pulling your hair, this is the direct answer to it.
Two honest limits. Nodpod itself notes it is not a true blackout mask, and light can get in around the nose and temples. And without a strap it can slide off if you move a lot, which is a real risk for an active side sleeper. The fabric is reversible, cotton on one side and brushed velvet on the other, and it is machine washable and HSA/FSA eligible. It was $38 at Nodpod on August 17, 2026 and $38 at Sunset & Co. on August 26, 2026.
Skip it if: you turn a lot at night, since with no strap it can slide off toward the pillow.
Most cushioning between your face and the pillow
3. Ostrichpillow Eye Mask
This is the padded middle ground: a polyurethane foam fill inside a 92 percent viscose and 8 percent elastane shell, roughly 30 by 8.5 by 3 cm, with a nylon and spandex adjustable strap. The foam gives you more cushion than a flat mask without the height of Manta's cups, which suits people who want padding but not a molded contour.
It weighs only 30 g, so there is very little mass to shift when you roll. The caveats are straightforward: Ostrichpillow does not offer detachable or independently adjustable eye cups the way Manta does, foam padding compresses and softens with heavy use, and at the $45 we read on Ostrichpillow's site on August 26, 2026 it is the most expensive mask in this group.
Skip it if: you want cups you can position yourself, since the padding is fixed and it costs more than most padded masks.
Best cheap option, with an honest caveat
4. Alaska Bear Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask
The Alaska Bear is 19 momme mulberry silk on both sides, about 0.5 oz, with a strap adjustable from 15.8 to 27.6 inches. Its real advantage for side sleepers is the low profile: because it is flat and thin, it fits under CPAP straps and leaves room for earplugs, and there is no bulk between your temple and the pillow.
The caveat is the whole reason the other three masks exist. This is a flat mask, so it rests directly on your eyelids, and Alaska Bear's own design notes acknowledge it blocks light less completely than a molded or weighted mask. It also needs hand washing rather than the machine. At the $14.51 we read at Luggage Factory on August 26, 2026, it is by far the cheapest way to find out whether a mask helps you at all.
Skip it if: pressure on your eyelids bothers you, since the flat silk panel rests directly on them all night.
Common questions
What makes a sleep mask work for side sleeping specifically?
Three things. A strap that adjusts and sits low enough not to be pinned between your head and the pillow, a contour or cup that keeps material off your eyelids and lashes, and low enough bulk that the mask does not get levered off when your face presses into the pillow.
Contoured or flat?
Contoured if pressure on your eyes is what bothers you. Manta's cups detach and reposition so nothing touches the eyelids, which is the clearest published solution to that problem here. Flat masks like the Alaska Bear pack smaller and fit under CPAP straps but rest directly on your eyes.
Is a strapless mask like the Nodpod safe to use on your side?
Safe, yes, but it is more likely to move. Nodpod's design has no head strap at all, which is why it does not pull hair or press elastic into your temple, and also why it can slide off if you shift position often during the night.
Do weighted masks block more light?
Not necessarily. Weight and light blocking are separate properties. Nodpod is weighted at 9 oz and states it is not a true blackout mask, while Manta's unweighted cups are the design here built specifically to seal light out.
How do you decide these rankings?
We compare published manufacturer specifications, the same information you would find on the product pages, and we say which one suits which problem. We do not sleep in these masks and we will not pretend otherwise. Prices are read from retailer pages and dated.
