Our verdict

Where it wins

  • Costs a fraction of mainstream blenders and a tenth of a Vitamix
  • Glass jar does not scratch or absorb odors the way plastic jars can
  • Jar, lid and blades are dishwasher safe, and the warranty runs 3 years

Where it loses

  • 700 peak watts is far below full-size rivals, so fibrous and frozen loads blend slower and coarser
  • 40 oz glass jar is heavier than plastic and smaller than the 64 to 72 oz pitchers on family machines
  • No single-serve cups or presets, just timed button pressing

At around $40 this is the sensible pick for occasional milkshakes, salsas and soft-fruit smoothies. Daily green-smoothie makers or ice crushers will outgrow the 700 watt motor quickly, and for them the Ninja Professional Plus at roughly $60 more is the better spend.

Common questions

Can it crush ice?

Hamilton Beach markets the Ice Sabre blades for ice crushing and includes an icy drink function. With only 700 peak watts, expect small batches and coarser results than high-power machines produce.

Is the jar glass or plastic?

The 58148 series uses a 40 oz glass jar. Glass resists scratching and staining but adds weight and can break if dropped.

What is the Wave Action system?

Hamilton Beach's name for the jar geometry that funnels ingredients continuously down into the blades, which reduces the need to stop and stir.
