Our verdict

Where it wins

  • 2.5 lb steps below 25 lb make slow progression possible
  • Dial adjustment changes weight in seconds without loose plates
  • One pair covers warm-up weights through 52.5 lb per hand

Where it loses

  • Increments jump in 5 lb steps above 25 lb
  • The 16.9 in body stays the same length even at 5 lb, which feels bulky on small movements
  • Like most selectorized dumbbells, they are not built to be dropped

The SelectTech 552 is the default pick in this category for a reason: wide range, small increments at the light end, and a fast dial. Buy it if you train at home and want one compact pair for everything up to 52.5 lb. Skip it if you press more than that, or if you drop weights, since the plastic-and-metal selector housing is not made for impacts.

Common questions

How do you change the weight?

You turn a dial on each end of the dumbbell while it sits in its base tray. The dial locks the selected plates to the handle and leaves the rest in the tray.

What increments does it adjust in?

BowFlex lists 15 settings: 2.5 lb steps from 5 to 25 lb, then 5 lb steps from 25 to 52.5 lb.

Can I drop them on the floor?

No. The selector mechanism holds plates on the handle mechanically, and BowFlex's design is not intended for drops. Set them down under control.
