Our verdict

Where it wins

  • Smart pressure sensor gives feedback in both directions, too soft as well as too hard
  • Handle display and Oral-B app show mode, timer, and where you have brushed
  • Hard travel case and charger included

Where it loses

  • Only takes proprietary iO brush heads, a 2-pack was $29.99 at Target when we checked, about $15 per head
  • Costs more than twice as much as Oral-B's own Pro 1000
  • Position tracking requires brushing with your phone nearby and the app open

The iO 5 is the cheapest way into Oral-B's iO platform and carries most of what makes the line distinctive: the quieter micro-vibrating drive, the two-way pressure sensor, and app-based coverage tracking. The catch is the ongoing cost, since iO heads run roughly twice the price of standard Oral-B heads. Buy it if the brushing feedback will actually change how you brush; stick with a Pro 1000 if it will not.

Common questions

What do replacement brush heads cost?

The iO series only accepts iO heads. An iO Ultimate Clean 2-pack was $29.99 at Target on 2026-08-28, about $15 per head, with replacement recommended about every 3 months.

What does the app add?

Oral-B says the app tracks how and where you brush in real time and includes a brush head replacement tracker. The brush still works normally without the app.

How is the iO 5 different from cheaper Oral-B brushes?

It adds micro-vibrations to the oscillating head, a pressure sensor that signals too soft as well as too hard, a handle display, five modes, and app tracking. Cheaper models like the Pro 1000 use standard heads and skip all of that.
