Our verdict

Where it wins

  • Built-in conical burr grinder doses straight into the portafilter, so beans are fresh at every shot
  • Dose control grinding plus digital PID temperature control give more repeatable shots than a pod machine or a bare manual one
  • Dedicated hot water spout makes tea, hot chocolate or an Americano without a separate kettle
  • Removable 67 oz tank with a water filter cuts down on refills for a household drinking several cups a day

Where it loses

  • Manual steam wand means microfoam quality depends on the user's technique, unlike the Bambino Plus's automatic wand
  • At roughly $700 it costs about 4.5 times as much as the entry-level Stilosa
  • Larger footprint than machines without a built-in grinder, so it needs more counter space and clearance to lift the hopper lid

The Barista Express is built for someone who wants the freshness of grinding right before the shot without buying a grinder and a machine separately. The tradeoff for that built-in grinder is size and a manual steam wand that takes practice to get right. Someone who already owns a grinder, or does not want to deal with dosing and tamping, is better served by the smaller Bambino Plus.

Common questions

Does it make regular drip coffee too?

No. It brews espresso, dispenses hot water, and steams and froths milk, but there is no drip coffee mode. Hot water can be added to a shot to make an Americano.

How many grind settings does it have?

Breville lists 16 grind settings on the integrated conical burr grinder, adjustable from fine to coarse.

What portafilter size does it use?

A 54 mm stainless steel portafilter, the same size as the Bambino Plus.

Does it need a special water filter?

Target's listing notes it ships with a carbon water filter for the 67 oz tank, which needs periodic replacement, but it is not a proprietary capsule or pod.
