This category has a shape worth knowing about before you shop. Sunrise alarm clocks are either cheap or expensive, and there is very little in between. The clocks we track cluster at two ends of the range with a wide empty gap in the middle, and that gap is not an accident of what we happen to track. It is what the market looks like.
Every price below came off a retailer page we opened, with the date. What follows is what each end of the range buys, and why the middle is empty.
The mechanism is the same everywhere: an LED that ramps from dim to bright over some number of minutes before your alarm time. A thirty-five dollar clock and a hundred and seventy dollar clock both do that. What separates them is the light quality, the controls, and whether the useful features are behind a subscription.

A ramping LED, a pile of colour modes, a small speaker with built-in sounds or an FM radio, and physical buttons. These are the clocks that answer the actual question, which is whether waking to light instead of noise suits you. The compromises are light quality at low brightness, where cheap LEDs go blue and step rather than fade, and build that feels like what it costs.

The empty middle $60 to $160
There is almost nothing here, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than padding the range. Makers either build to a budget price point or build a premium bedside device, and very little is aimed between the two. If you have a hundred dollars to spend, you are choosing between paying less than you planned or more.

Premium bedside device $160 and up
Warm, properly dimmed light that fades smoothly rather than stepping, adjustable sunrise durations, better speakers, and design that looks like a lamp instead of a gadget. Two things to watch at this end. Some of these run an app and a subscription for the full sound library, and some deliberately have no connectivity at all. Those are opposite products at the same price, and which one you want is a real decision.

The subscription question is the one people get caught by. At least one popular clock in this range ships with a free sound library and sells a larger one as a monthly or yearly plan. The clock works without paying, and the marketing photography tends to show the paid version. We list the subscription as its own spec line on every product page where one exists, and there is a separate page working through what those recurring costs add up to.
One claim we will not repeat: sunrise clocks are frequently sold as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder. Light therapy for SAD uses specific intensities for specific durations, and a bedside alarm clock is not the same product as a light therapy box. If that is what you need, the intensity spec is the number to check, and most of these do not publish it.

Is an expensive sunrise alarm clock worth it?
The light is the honest difference. Cheap LEDs step between brightness levels and go blue at the bottom of the range, which undercuts the point of a gradual sunrise. Premium clocks fade smoothly through warm tones and let you set how long the ramp takes. Everything else you are paying for, the speaker, the app, the way it looks on a nightstand, is preference rather than function.
