What the Hatch+ subscription costs, and what works without it

The question people actually ask about the Hatch Restore is not what it costs. It is whether the thing they already bought is going to keep asking for money. So here is the direct answer first: the Hatch Restore works without a subscription. The alarm works, the sunrise light works, the reading light works, and a library of sleep sounds and lighting presets is included with the hardware. You do not have to pay a monthly fee to use the clock as a clock.
What the Hatch+ subscription buys is a much larger content library, sounds and sleep stories and guided content that the free tier does not include. That is a content subscription, not a licence to operate the device, and the distinction matters because a lot of the coverage of this product blurs it.
The wider point is worth staying for. Hatch is not unusual. A growing share of sleep hardware is sold at a hardware price and then billed again, and the recurring number is almost never on the box. Read those three rows together and the pattern is clear enough. A subscription attached to a piece of sleep hardware is either optional content, as with Hatch, or the actual product, as with a smart ring whose readings live behind a membership. The first kind is easy to ignore. The second kind changes what the device costs by a few hundred dollars over the years you own it.

Do I need a subscription to use the Hatch Restore 3?
No. The alarm, the sunrise and wind-down light, the reading light and a library of 40 sleep sounds all work with no subscription. Hatch+ adds a larger content library on top. If you bought the clock to wake up to light instead of an alarm tone, you never need to pay the fee.
What do you get free with the Hatch Restore?
40 sleep sounds and the lighting presets, plus every physical function of the device: sunrise simulation, wind-down routines, the reading light, and the physical buttons that let you run it without picking up your phone. Setup and custom routines use the app and a WiFi connection, but the app itself is free.
Is Hatch+ worth paying for?
It depends on whether you will use the content, which is the honest answer rather than a hedge. If you want a sunrise alarm and a sound to fall asleep to, the free library covers it and the fee buys nothing you need. If you will actually work through guided sleep content most nights, it is a few dollars a month for something you use daily. What we will not tell you is that it improves your sleep, because we cannot verify that.
Which sleep devices have no subscription at all?
Of the devices in the table above, the RingConn ring states that all app features are included with the hardware and no subscription is required. Most of the non-connected gear we track, including the sunrise clocks without an app and every weighted blanket and earplug, has no recurring cost by design.
